Healthy Lifestyle Tips for Students

According to Fernando Gmez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain, “Diet, exercise, and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function.” Pinilla has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise, and sleep on the brain.

The food we eat affects our mental function. So if you ever wonder why you are having a hard time understanding your lessons and remembering concepts and theories even if you have studied so hard for it, then your problem might lie on the kind of food that you have been munching and what activities you have been doing all this time that have contributed to your mental sluggishness.

If you are a student and you are struggling with your academic career, you should better read this in full detail. I will be telling you what food will be beneficial to your survival in the academe and what food should you avoid. Some do's and dont's that you need to aid you improve your studying habits. Some of these are actually based on my experience, preference and further readings.


  1. EATING FISH LEADS TO BETTER GRADES. Does eating fish really lead you to having good grades? That would be a YES. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids and these acids are very essential to proper neural function. These are healthy fats and are important for a healthy mind. This helps us focus more and, as a result, allows us to study more efficiently. So, eating at least 2 servings in a week is good for the brain and the heart according to webmd.com.


  1. AN APPLE A DAY AIDS YOUR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. Apple contains antioxidants that can enhance memory function. So if you usually study at night, eating an apple during your break time can help you improve your studying habits. For ageing people, it can help in avoiding the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

  1. DARK CHOCOLATES CAN INCREASE ALERTNESS. Not just any other kind of chocolates but DARK CHOCOLATES. They may not be very delicious but they contain antioxidant properties and natural stimulants like caffeine, that can enhance our concentration. However, do not overdose yourself by eating too much because like with anything, too much is never good. According to webmd.com, you can eat up to an ounce a day.


  1. LAUGHTER PRIMES YOUR BRAIN. They say that laughter is the best medicine. It is indeed true, especially to your brain and to your body as a whole. It helps relieves stress and depression. According to helpguide.org, listening to jokes and working out punch lines activates areas of the brain vital to learning and creativity. So whenever you are depress before an exam, always go with people who make you laugh. This helps you answer your exams better.


  1. JUNK FOOD & FAST FOOD CAUSES LOW LEVELS OF CONCENTRATION. According to Dr. Shetty, a renowned Mumbai-based psychiatrist, excessive consumption of junk food, especially those with high additives can lead to low Vitamin B12, a nutrient vital role in the normal functioning of the brain. You better stay away from these type of food when periodic examinations are near.

These healthy tips are just my preferences on how I maintain a good academic performance way back when I was a student. It doesn't mean that what is not written here does not apply to a healthy lifestyle for students. There are dozens of lifestyle tips for the brain.
